Construction has some of the strongest growth in the region, but there is also a rise in health care, IT and accounting jobs.
It is hoped the Government's $42 million package to help train more people in construction will help speed up the Christchurch rebuild.
Part of the package includes up to 3000 places in polytechnics for construction-related training.
Executive Director of the Industry Training Federation, Jeremy Baker, says as well as training, the package will help people find work in the sector.
He says the package addresses a significant shortage of trades-people in the industry.
"The risk was that the rebuilding of Christchurch wouldn't happen in time and people are obviously pretty stressed down there and we don't really want to have things slowed down anymore than they need to be," he says.
Mr Baker says the need for more trades-people is nationwide.
