Culverden man Michael Nordstrom collided head-on with another motorcycle rider on a private motocross track near Hanmer Springs
The parents of a North Canterbury man who was seriously hurt when he collided with a motocross rider heading the wrong way around a private motorsport track near Hanmer Springs are questioning safety procedures at the venue.
Culverden apprentice builder Michael Nordstrom, 20, was left with head injuries, dislocated elbows, a broken arm and a broken wrist after the crash on the fastest section of the Pucker Park motocross track.
The other rider, Canterbury University student Shayne McKenna, 24, suffered a broken leg, a lacerated femoral artery and suspected broken ribs.
Mr McKenna is a member of Canterbury University's Motorsport Society, MotoSoc, which hired the venue as part of its annual "Hammered in Hanmer" pub crawl and weekend of partying. Police say it appeared Mr McKenna had missed a briefing and was travelling the wrong way.
Mr Nordstrom's parents, Grant and Ann, want to know how Mr McKenna came to be riding the wrong way.
"We're not very happy about the way the track is run," Mrs Nordstrom said. "We'll definitely be looking into it further. We don't want this to happen to anyone else. " Event organisers did not return calls to The Star.
