Lincoln University vice-chancellor Professor Roger Field announced his intention to retire from his position after 40 years of leadership in the tertiary education sector.

Professor Field started his career as a lecturer in plant science, attained pre-eminence in his discipline as a professor and then rose to leadership roles in management and governance.

His four decades of dedicated service culminated in his eight-year tenure as vice-chancellor.

Lincoln University chancellor Tom Lambie said: "It is sad news for the university, but we deeply appreciate his service and commitment since 1970 and know he will remain very much an influence in the university and academic sector in New Zealand.

"During his tenure, Professor Field has greatly strengthened Lincoln University's focus on research and repositioned the tertiary institution as New Zealand's specialist, land-based university. A key priority has been to lead and support future growth and transformation of the country's land, people and economies both nationally and globally. We are immensely grateful for his stewardship in securing Lincoln University as a recognised leader in land-based research and education."

Professor Field is well known for his approach to collaborative partnerships both in the private and public sector. He has successfully negotiated partnerships with other institutions, including the merger with Telford Rural Polytechnic earlier this year.

Professor Field says it is hard to believe he has been part of Lincoln University for more than 40 years.

"It has been part of the fabric of my life for more than four decades. I wouldn't change it for anything.

"Lincoln University has a special and unique place in Canterbury and New Zealand and each and every student, graduate, lecturer and staff member makes a significant contribution to this country."
