Redwood's Tina Dockerty is asking for help in organising the 2011 Paddington Neighbourhood Event.
A Redwood woman is going the extra mile to help out her neighbour - organising his dream project while he is in hospital with cancer.
Tina Dockerty, a 40-year-old mother of two, is asking for help to organise the 2011 Paddington Neighbourhood Event - a community fair in Paddington Park.
Her neighbour, Gary Watts, spent months bringing the event together but has been battling cancer and recently had to go to hospital to undergo an operation.
Miss Dockerty decided to help him out.
"He's just an amazing gentleman; he's always the first person to greet you or check you are all right after an earthquake. He's been working so hard on this event and I just thought the community should band together and help him out. This event means so much to him. If he can come out of hospital and see the whole thing coming together, and see that the community cares, it would be amazing."
But Miss Dockerty can't do it alone, as she is juggling the organisational demands with looking after her two autistic boys.
"At the moment, it's just been put a video on, give the boys a pack or raisins and it's off down the hall to organise this. It is a big job and we just really need people to support it. Anything people can do would be a great help."
Mr Watts had already secured a power generator, portaloos and permission to use the parks, but was in need of a truck to be used as a stage, as well as other items. Miss Dockerty was calling for the community to get in behind her and make the event a success. "Anyone that can help would be fantastic. If you have something you'd like to sell at a stall, come on down. If the schools have chairs or tables for the day that'd be great. If you're a performer and would like to put on a show, let me know. If you have a bouncy castle you can let us use, let's do it."
The event was a "family-friendly, fun fair" that would give back to the community, she said. "This area was so lucky in the earthquake but so many of us helped people in other areas out. This is a way of saying thank you and bringing people together. We want to see barbecues and stalls and entertainment. It will be a really great day."
The 2011 Paddington Neighbourhood Event will be held on November 6 at Paddington Park. Anyone who can help out with the event should call Tina Dockerty on 0272308366.
