The owner of a Hei Hei fish and chip shop was lucky to escape with just a hole in his trousers after a knife-wielding offender tried to slash his leg.
Steve Zhao's Wycola Food Bar was closed and the 23-year-old was in a back room cutting chips for the next day when he heard what sounded like stones being thrown on the roof about 9.45pm on Sunday.
Mr Zhao went outside and found two men hiding by his car.
He confronted them, and one ran off.
However the other man pulled out a small knife and tried to slash him with it.
The knife cut Mr Zhao's trousers but did not puncture his leg.
The two men then ran off.
Mr Zhao said he was "fine now" but next time he would call the police rather than confront potential offenders.
"I was just angry," he said.
He phoned police the following day.
Mr Zhao said the men spoke Maori or Samoan, and they looked about 18-20 years old.
Because it was dark he could not see them clearly, but his attacker had long hair and wore a dark coloured jacket.
Police ask anyone with information on the two men to phone the Christchurch South CIB on 363 2500.
