The seagull family near Redcliffs has grown.

A couple of seagulls which built their nest in roadside gravel near Redcliffs had new additions to the family at Christmas time.

Two fluffy chicks hatched in the last month were the pride and joy of causeway residents Minsky and Erin. The young family are flourishing after a Christchurch fencing contractor fenced in the nest to ensure the chicks would not hop into traffic. His efforts were reported in the Christchurch Star before Christmas.

Passing motorists will be able to keep up with the chicks' progress as the youngsters prepare for their first flying lessons.

Christchurch City Council coastal area park ranger Scott Butcher said the black backed gull chicks would leave the nest after about 50 days.
