Wiseman bowls himself into record books

Paul Wiseman had never heard of Victorian cricket great Albert Moss until Monday night.

He's heard a lot about him since then after putting himself into the New Zealand cricket record books second only to Moss with his nine wickets for 13 runs haul in Canterbury's record 343 run win over Central Districts at the Village Green.

The 34-year-old is not setting his sights on bettering Moss's feat of taking all 10 wicket for 28 runs for Canterbury against Wellington back in 1889-90 at Hagley Park.

Monday's achievement was "one in a lifetime!" he said.

"I talked to Tim McIntosh before the day started and said I was pretty keen to get six wickets today, and my sister Kate told me the night before I was going to get nine!"

Coach Michael Sharpe said Wiseman's spell ? which earned him a Black Caps recall to the squad for today's final match against the World 11 ? was "unreal."

"That's the art of spin bowling," he said. "He had support at the other end from the seamers who kept the pressure on." The wicket was starting to take turn on the third day and Canterbury knew the medium pacemen were not going to do the job, he said. "We hoped there'd be a bag of wickets for him but we never dreamed of nine."

Wiseman said it had been good to get a lot of overs under his belt after not getting much bowling in the past month because of the way the wickets had been and the one-day games.

Now he aims to make the most of any chances he gets with the Black Caps.

"I think my bowling went reasonably well in Australia in tough conditions and against pretty good teams," he said.
