The growth of women's surfing will be reflected in the Canterbury championships this weekend ? the organisers expect more than 50 competitors.

The contest at New Brighton, being held for the second year, has $3500 in prizes.

Women's surfing was taking off in popularity, said organiser Manu Brown.

"New Zealand girls are starting to make big jumps on the overseas circuits now, with Gisborne's Lisa Hurunui on the world qualifying series and our juniors progressing in Australia."

One of Christchurch's top youngsters, Daisy Thomas ? who won the national under-16 series ? has to miss the championship. She is competing in the inter-districts surf life-saving championships in Taranaki.

Top entrants include last year's champion Leilani Morgan, Nicola Wilson-Brown, Sophie Moore (Muriwai), and Angie Koops (Kaikoura)
