Works old and new on ballet programme

Young ballet dancers make a colourful sight as they prepare for next week's production.

Works old and new feature in the Southern Ballet Theatre's end of year concert at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School in Christchurch on December 16 and 17.

The festive story, The Christmas Fairy, is a new ballet set in a village in Ireland.

A young lad, who seeks to believe in the wonder of fairies, goes on an adventure of discovery. Led by the Christmas Fairy, he finds a magical land full of colour and fantasy.

Written for Southern Ballet by Jasmine Orchard, it features original choreography by the company's artistic director and master tutor, Lorraine Peters. It will be performed by all the students and company members of Southern Ballet.

The evenings also feature an excerpt from La Esmeralda. Victor Hugo's 19th century work Notre Dame de Paris was transformed into ballet as La Esmeralda, and the Southern Ballet's intermediate company will perform the excerpt from this work.

Meanwhile the junior company members will showcase their talents in Variations with Glazunov, featuring the choreography of Peters and the beautiful musical score of Glazunov.

Bookings can be made at the Court Theatre on 963-0870. Tickets cost $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $12 for children. Performances begin at 7pm.
